Nov 1, 2007, TRADING PLACES: LANGUAGE AND CULTURE

An article by Maxine Slater.

Flying back to the UK for two weeks in mid-September, away from the non-stopsunshine to a temperature significantly lower than here in Fethiye, I thoughtabout the massive learning curve I had been through in the last 15 months, especiallygetting to grips with the Turkish language. Despite the fact that I knew a fairbit about Turkey as the borough in which I worked has the largest number of Turkish immigrants in the UK, nothing prepares you for the reality of living here...

Oct 26, 2007, Trip to Izmir

My trip to Asia has unfortunately been delayed for a week or two as I've had a problem with an old root canal filling. I had to go to Izmir on Monday to see a specialist Dental Surgeon. Hopefully in about a week I will have the root canal re-done & can book my flight.

Here is a picture I took in Izmir & another from the Terrace at the Bar:

Oct 14, 2007, Overseas Plans Progress

Yesterday I bought 8 T-Shirts from Turgutreis Market for a bargain price of 2 YTL each. Tomorrow I plan to get them printed for my Tour.

It was Erdem's birthday yesterday & he and Sam had a Pasta Party. I met a couple of interesting guys from Canada, Scott & Russ, who are currently on a 4 month tour of Europe. They are staying in Turgutreis for the next 3 weeks before moving onto Greece, Italy & Spain. They have a blog of their trip on facebook. I'll add the link here tomorrow so you can see what they've been up to.

Scott & Russ - Canadians Abroad

Amongst the friends who came were several Ex-Pats from Belgium, America & England, including Amanda from England who was there with her friend Hussein.

We finally had rain this morning with a big thunder, lightning and hailstone storm. It quickly cleared up though and the sun started shining again.

Oct 12, 2007, Seker Bayram - Peace Tour Overseas - Slow Down.

Today is a public holiday in Turkey, Seker Bayram, which is to celebrate the end of Ramazan (a month of fasting during daylight hours for Muslims).

I tried to book my flight to Thailand with Turkmenistan Airlines but received no answer on the phone. I guess they must be closed today, so I'll leave it until Monday. I decided yesterday to make my trip to South East Asia a "Peace Tour". I will start another blog in the next few days on this subject so those of you interested can find out what it's all about & track my progress.

Finally, I read an article today on the Global Intelligencer entitled "Slow Down". I think it is has particular relevance if you're planning on Moving Overseas, as you're changing your life in a big way anyway. Click the link below to read the article.

May 11, 2007, Adapting to a New Place

by Jo-Ann Garbutt

The first few days and even months in a new location usually feels like a holiday, where everything is new and exciting and you are dying to explore your new surroundings. After about the 2nd month you start noticing that the people around you are very different from you - they have very different thoughts and opinions about life, how one should lead a life, how a life should be constructed and they may even start "sharing" criticism about the way you are doing it "wrong." If you are lucky enough to have moved to a new place with someone else you like a lot (even love), it helps to smooth over those types of rough starts. It helps even more if you can understand and speak the local language before you arrive. It is much easier to ask for directions and advice when the local people can understand you...

May 5, 2007, Divorce Issues and Options for Expats

by John King

These days more and more people from the UK are working abroad, either permanently or on long-term contracts. Many are choosing to retire to a home in the sun. Unfortunately the latest Government statistics show that just over thirty-five percent of marriages break down, and whilst it is bad enough to go through the upset and trauma of separation and divorce in the UK, the problems for expats are very much worse in many cases. You feel somehow disconnected from the help you could obtain in the UK, the Citizens Advice Bureau, the friendly local solicitor just down the road, the powers of the English courts and their ability to dispense swift and fair justice, and you really can’t face the thought of going to a local lawyer, what with the language problems, the strange laws and customs, and you have heard that it takes years to get a divorce locally...

May 2, 2007, Retiring Abroad? Moving to your Dream Home Overseas?

by Hugo Raymond

Many of us have saved diligently with the idea of moving abroad to enjoy some sunny retirement years. However, before you finally choose the destination or move to an overseas home you may have purchased as a holiday villa, have you really considered all the options? I know it’s easy when working toward that retirement date to dream of spending endless days walking the beach in shorts and a T shirt, spending time in a favourite watering hole in the balmy evenings of the Mediterranean. There is obviously a lot more to it than that, but let us assume you have already considered all the financial implications and developed your own financial plot. The most common misconception is the actual location of this dream villa in the sun...

Apr 30, 2007, Inflated House Prices in the South of France

by Rumble Romagnoli

As a property agent in the South of France, my job is to find luxury villas in the South of France for global clients. Our clients are 75% London-based; maybe it is our marketing, but I believe Londoners either have a real love for this area, or have money to spend on luxury French holiday homes. The agency I work for specialises in luxury rental villas in the St Tropez area of the French Riviera; my area includes the golden triangle of St Tropez, Gassin, Ramatuelle and the highly popular villages of La Garde Freinet, and Plan de La Tour. I have noticed prices dropping by 7% since November on selected properties in my area, and others have stayed the same. Strange, when the price increase for Cote d’Azur properties in 2006 was 8% (according to figures from the French National Association of Estate Agents (FNAIM)). I asked myself "Why?"......

Feb 1, 2007, Living in France

by David Seymour

Thousands of Britons move abroad from the UK every year, and many of them choose France as their new home. While France is only a short distance away, literally just across the Channel, there is a world of difference between these two countries and lifestyles - enough of a difference to make thousands bid farewell to their native country and start a new life in 'La Douce France'. It is not only the weather which attracts expats. If you choose the south of France to be your new home and buy a property there, you'll find yourself in a Mediterranean climate with mild winters and warm summers. But many people also opt for other parts of the country...

Oct 14, 2006, Home for Dogs required in Bodrum area

Toto, is a Terrior cross-breed. He is a street dog but has been "adopted" by a couple near us but they are already overloaded with dogs so desparately need a home for this lovely natured dog. He is roughly 8 months old but is very mature for his age. Yesterday he was beaten up by a pack of dogs and we think has lost an eye. We took him to the vet and he corrected the eye as best he could. We will pay for Toto to be castrated in about a weeks time.

Stray-Dog-Turgutries (18K)
Toto

Please, does anybody know of anyone OR would you be willing to take this dog in. He is loving, gentle natured and just wants to be loved. He is a little unsure of being "in" a house so would be happy to be outside in a comfy kennel maybe.

There is also a gorgeous puppy who is laying outside our house. He has just appeared from somewhere. Roughly 3 months old. Looks like an Alsation cross. I cannot sit and watch him starve outside the house so have fed, and watered him. Washed a cut leg this morning for him as well. Again I think he would be happy to be in a kennel outside which would be better than the life he has now :-(. He is definiately young enough to be trained well. Again I am willing to help with his castration when he is old enough.

Stray-Puppy-Bodrum (14K)
Puppy

I dont want either of these dogs to go to homes where they will be tied up or left all day though. So please dont put forward anybody unless you are absolutely sure that they will be looked after well. Sorry to sound harsh.

Please get back to me if you can help. Tel 0090 5387 402498 (Turkcell, Turkey)

Thank you

Lorraine
