Mekong River - 6am

I arrived in Vientianne yesterday morning following a 12 hour bus ride from Bangkok. Comfortable VIP bus but I didn't get any sleep. I sat next to an Israeli girl who has been studying Psycology (no spell check on my mobile so not sure if that's right :-) at University for the last 4 years. We had a very interesting conversation and may meet up again.

Vientiane is the capital of Laos, on the banks of the Mekong river which is the border with Thailand. The city doesn't have much to shout about apart from the Buddhist temples and National museum, but due to lack of sleep I just spent the day chilling out over beers and resting. I got approached by a couple of working girls while sitting outside a bar last night, but despite some of the comments I got about coming to Thailand, that ain't my thing!

I'm now on the bus to Vang Vieng, about 3.5 hours further north. My Lonely Planet guide to Laos tells me that V.V. offers rock climbing courses, kayaking, tubing, caving, trekking etc. so it looks like I'm gonna have some fun over the next few days. It also reports that some bars and restaurants offer "Happy" menu's ! (Mum - don't ask).

I've had several replies from you guys in response to these blog reports. Please keep them coming. It's good to know you're reading them and interested and makes me feel like I have some company on the way. Please give feedback about content - what bores you, or what else you want to know. If u do find them boring, reply with "Unsubscribe" in the subject - don't worry, I won't be offended (I'll just cry myself to sleep at night ;-).

{Edit: now converted to blog so comments re. unsubscribing no longer apply}
